IRCHA Pilot Proficiency Program
The Pilot Proficiency Program provides a set of flying tasks which
need to be completed before advancing to the next level. It is a good
way to work out what to try next and to find holes in your abilities.
An online version can be found
here. And printable versions are below:
- Level 1.
- Level 2.
- Level 3.
- Level 4.
- Level 5.
- Level 6.
It can also be found at the back of Curtis Youngblood's book.
Wings
The MAAA provides a programme where pilots can be awarded Bronze and
Gold wings. The club has one official Instructor who can test pilots
for these levels. In flying terms, Bronze is similar to the Novice
competition routine and Gold is similar to the Advanced competition
routine. Candidates are also tested on their safety and maintenance
skills.
But I'm just starting
Here's some goals for someone who is starting out:
- Hover 10cm above the ground, no higher, staying within a 1m box.
- Hover 1m above the ground, staying within a 1m box.
- Once the above two tasks are able to be completed reliably, the pilot
is ready to take their training undercarriage off.
- Move the helicopter left and right while hovering.
- Turn the helicopter slight left while travelling left, turn it slightly
right while travelling right.
- Turn the helicopter a full 90 degrees while travelling in that direction.
- Bank in the turns at each end.
- Fly circuits.
- Do stall turns.
- Do loops
- Do rolls
- Hover nose in
- Fly and turn nose in
- Learn inverted flight
Each of these can take from a couple of tanks to many months to learn
properly. If you're stuck, ask someone at the club to give you feedback
on how you can improve further.
