57th MAAA Model Aircraft Championships 2004

April 19 & 20 Bussellton, WA

Details

Saturday 17 April - Catch a plane to Perth. Meet Neil, he has the models already loaded in the car, drive 3 hours south to Busselton. Meet the Perth guys, assemble model #1. Sleep.

Sunday 18 April - Practice Day. With permission, we broke into the old airport using an angle grinder and flew on the flight line used in the previous WA nationals. The hovering square was still maked out on the old runway. Everyone managed to prove that their models still flew, and did some practice either along the flightline with a bad cross wind, or wimped out and flew with the wind.

Monday 19 April - Day 1. Moved to the official airport. This was a nice field! I sure wish we could fly there all the time. The airport manager mowed a square for us, and we set out the square and did a short practice before drawing straws to get the flight order. It turned out that I was up first - not my favorite way to start a competition. Flying went well, and the scored were kept secret which was a nice change. We flew three rounds of F3C with the last getting pretty close to sunset. The wind dropped as did the visibility. I'm sure it was everyone's best round. Novice and Advanced put in a good effort, with the standard of flying being the most consistent I have seen at a compeition. The judges never felt that their lives were in danger, and it didn't look like anyone should have been flying in the next class up.

Tuesday 20 April - The final and very important day. One more round of F3C after the showers passed, then a round of novice and advanced. We also flew a round of F3C B schedule, which was judged but not counted towards our scores. Early in the day while waiting for a shower to pass the scored became public knowledge with Mick first, Neil second then me and George. The order stayed that way after the 4th round. Alex pulled out of Novice for some unknown reason. Harry Vandermaat put in an excellent effort for the competition in Novice, flying well and having a beautifully set up ergo 30. Nigel Brown put in a great effort in Advanced and will surely move onto F3C where he can use more of his 3D skills. The competition was very well run, full credit to the Whiteman Model Heli Club!
