December 30 2001 - January 5 2002, Albury Wodonga
Coming soon: Pictures!
Tuesday 1 January - The day before competition, and registration day. Registring at the Albury sports complex involved getting your radio checked and picking up a bag of goddies. Most competitors took the opportunity to check out the flying field and have a flight to get accustomed to the field. An informal dinner was arranged in Albury.
Wednesday 2 January - A typical late start for a competition, giving everyone time to figure out who was who and complete formalities which involved weighing your model, checking your radio got certified and checking your FAI number appeared on the model somewhere (even if it was written on the bottom with a texta).
The plan for Wednesday was to have one round of each category, with the ordering being F3C, advanced then novice.
You could tell there was a helicopter competition coming up, because the wind was blowing! There was a 8-10 m/s wind blowing fairly much straight up the flight line from the west.
F3C was flown, with two competitors stopping due to the windy conditions. Advanced came next and finally after lunch was novice.
Thursday 3 January - Thursday was the business day, two rounds of each category were flown. The weather was a bit nicer and almost everybody beat their previous days score. Aparently this is normal, so it was not entirely the weathers fault. Again, F3C then advanced then intermediate were flown, followed by lunch and then the whole lot again.
The MAAA had a daily newsletter, which seemed to be delivered to the field late morning. There were plenty of mentions of the helicopter events, and pictures of some competitors.
Friday 4 January - The final day, and the final round for each category. This time the wind was very light and from the east, however it slowly swung around to the west but stayed light. Novice went first to take advantage of the good conditions. Next was advanced and finally F3C. Fred Proose from Qld pulled out of this round after his tail failed.
We all had lunch and gave Roger time to figure out the final scores. The official collection of trophies was to take place at the dinner on Saturday.
