There is much about them that is worthy of study. There, then, are a dozen reasons, sketched out very briefly. Each of them could be expanded upon, especially with reference to the specific situation you find yourself in as a teacher. And there are probably a dozen more reasons as well. It will be well worth your while becoming familiar with them and rehearsing their use. Abstract reasons The scope of this book limits it to a discussion of material culture. But do not think that just because we are concerned with material culture, the only way to appreciate it is through facts or material means.
It is difficult, therefore, to concentrate on a single subject when visiting a museum. It is far better to use the visit in a multidisciplinary way so that it provides stimulus for all sorts of work in all sorts of areas. In a primary school this is far easier to achieve than at secondary level because of the way the school is organised. It is also second nature for the primary teacher to be working in a cross-curricular way. But the cross-curricular nature of objects also applies to pupils working at secondary level.
